What are the treatment options for TMJ and bruxism disorders?

The temporomandibular joint, or “TMJ,” is the connector between your lower and upper jaw and serves as the “hinge” that allows your mouth to open and close. Sometimes, unfortunately, individuals develop TMJ dysfunction, which causes pain, strain, and muscle tension, and can restrict jaw movement. Fortunately, there’s a variety of options for effectively managing and alleviating TMJ issues!

Non-Surgical TMJ Treatments

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers to ease pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Hot or cold packs to temporarily relieve swelling and pain.
  • Physical therapy to strengthen jaw muscles and improve their range of motion.
  • Relaxation changes to reduce clenching and tooth grinding (“bruxism”).
  • Wearing a mouthguard or splint while sleeping to prevent clenching and grinding and reposition and reduce pressure on the jaw.
  • Avoiding hard, chewy, or sticky foods that place strain on the jaw.

TMJ Treatments for Severe Cases

In more serious cases, certain surgical interventions can be viable:

  • Arthrocentesis — A minimally invasive procedure to “irrigate” the joint and relieve pain.
  • Arthroscopy — The use of a small incision to repair TMJ joint structures.
  • Open joint surgery — A more invasive path of treatment to correct structural TMJ issues — includes joint replacement surgery.
